I’ve been meaning to check this out for awhile now, I finally got around to it last night, in the opening scenes of The Social Network mark is hacking the face-books of student houses at Harvard. While hacking the Leverett House, Mark uses a perl script to parse the student database for ‘/female\/([0-9]+\.jpg)/’ allowing him to download images of all the girls in the house. After reviewing the code it is ‘fairly’ accurate.
Here is a valid profile, and here is the getface.php, while the script isn’t perfect, his commentary on searches returning embedded php pages is accurate. Also, houses still have searchable face-books, allowing the simple hacks Mark used years ago while coding Facemash.
It’s refreshing to see Hollywood using real world technology; we likely have Social Network’s producer Scott Rudin to thank for this. Similar scenes of hacking, use of nmap and sql database searches can be seen in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
